BRUNEI DARUSSALAM CHAIRS ASEAN DEFENCE SENIOR OFFICIALS’ MEETING WORKING GROUP OF 2021
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 2 February 2021 – The first defence sectoral meeting under the 2021 ASEAN Chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam namely the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group (ADSOM WG) meeting was held today at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Jalan Berakas.
The meeting was chaired by Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Strategy) at the Ministry of Defence in his capacity as Brunei Darussalam’s ADSOM WG Leader.
The two-day meeting held virtually discussed on a broad range of agendas including the progress of ASEAN defence cooperation, consideration of new and revised concept papers as well as initiatives. These include initiatives led by Brunei Darussalam particularly the ASEAN Direct Communications Infrastructure, ASEAN Defence Interaction Programme and Logistics Support Framework.
Among others, the ADSOM WG meeting serves as a platform where ASEAN Member States can promote mutual trust and confidence among defence establishments and present Working Group Leaders the opportunity to table proposals and initiatives on defence cooperation.
The meeting also serves as a prelude to the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) which is the highest defence consultative and cooperative mechanism in ASEAN. The ADMM was established in 2006 and among the main objectives of the ADMM is to promote regional peace and stability through dialogue and cooperation in defence and security.
